BSWSA volunteered with Daily Planet Health Services, a Richmond-local organization that seeks to provide health services to all regardless of their housing, financial, citizenship, or insurance status. We participated in the Breaking Bread Program at their Safe Haven location where we prepped, cooked, and served dinner for the residents of the transitional housing facility, which provides comprehensive and integrated health support services to homeless veterans with mental health, substance-use disorders, and/or clients eligible for the Ryan White program.

BSWSA’s mission aims to foster connections between the next generation of social workers and the greater Richmond community. Participating in Breaking Bread was an honor, as it allowed our organization to directly engage with our community, reinforcing the core social work values of service, the importance of human relationships, and the dignity and worth of the person. This experience aligned with NASW’s 6th core competency, which highlights engaging with individuals, families, organizations, and communities. Ultimately, it encouraged social work students to apply classroom knowledge in a real-world setting, bridging the gap between education and practice to better serve vulnerable populations.
